How do psychedelics affect a person's brain chemistry?

Your question is very vague and seems loaded, so I’m not sure how to answer it. Almost no psychedelic drugs are neurotoxic except for perhaps some of the newer designer drugs/research chemicals such as MDMA (although MDMA is not really a psychedelic), as well as Ibogaine. Others such as salvia are simply not well understood at the moment and we do not have sufficient data as to whether it poses any neurological risk.

Among the classical psychedelics (magic mushrooms, LSD, mescaline, DMT) there do not appear to be any adverse neurological effects. Psilocybin, the active ingredient in magic mushrooms, has even been shown to cause neurogenesis, and it also has been shown to permanently increase trait openness by one standard deviation. There have also been studies at Johns Hopkins that indicate it may be one of the most effective ways of combating addiction.

Because these drugs are illegal, controlled substances, there is limited data on them, but presently there is no data that I know of which indicates that any of the classical psychedelics can cause any sort of brain damage. The newer psychedelics have no data either way, and we simply don’t know.
