After pollination, the pollen grain from the anther adheres to the stigma due to the sticky nature of the stigma. The pollen grain has two nuclei; the generative nucleus and the tube nucleus. The tube nucleus forms a germinating pollen tube as it gets its nutrients from the tissues of the style. The tube nucleus is found at the tip of the tube while the generative nucleus follows  behind it.

The generative nucleus divides by mitosis to form two male nuclei. The pollen tube from the stigma, through the style upto the ovule in the ovary, continues germinating. It reaches the ovule through the micropyle. When it touches the embryo sac, the wall of the embryo sac and the tube nucleus disintegrate, leaving the two male nuclei in the pollen tube. One of the male nuclei moves in to fertilise the egg cell nucleus to form a diploid zygote.

The other male nucleus moves to the polar nuclei where they fuse to form a triploid primary endosperm.
